Investment to Target “Missing Middle” Between Microfinance and Commercial Capital Markets
NEW YORK, February 19, 2008 – The Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF), Omidyar Network, and Google.org announced today a new $17 million Small to Medium EnterpriseInvestment Company for India to create job opportunities and spur greater economic participation for a larger segment of the population. This joint Investment Company will provide capital to small and medium businesses in underserved markets.

The Soros Economic Development Fund (SEDF) is pleased to
award a grant of $175,000 to Tameer Microfinance Bank
Ltd, the fastest growing microfinance institution in
Pakistan. This grant will support the integration of
Tameer Microfinance Bank into the national payment
system, covering the cost of connectivity to a
nationwide Automatic Teller Machine switch, and
membership in the Real Time Gross Settlement for check
